An interesting door knob near Limehouse. Sadly just after taking this, my first pic of the day, my camera died! Made for an easy edit, though…

What makes us moral?

In ideas, neighbours, philosophy, quakers on September 11, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Most people accept that there are right and wrong actions- immoral and moral behaviours, if you will. This feeling presupposes some kind of framework or system for judging whether actions are immoral or moral.

What is this system? Natural or supernatural? Human-limited or utterly objective? Learned or innate?

My own instincts push me in the direction of a minimal, open-ended system, something like ‘what if everyone did what you did/you were the object of the action you’re contemplating’?

I also feel that respect and empathy (some of the key drivers for moral behaviour) are learned, so in a way, morality is learned.

I’ll need to write more on this in my final year philosophy dissertation. Watch this space for developing thinking!

Daily photo (23) under water 09.09.10

A straightforward view from our kitchen window, just flipped upside down. I found that the colour and texture on the water changes from second to second, as the light shifts and even gentle breezes create ripples on the surface…no Photoshop required!

One pic only today (not counting a half-hearted effort late in the evening). Like the way the arrow ‘flows’ out of the lorry’s wheel. No cropping, either!

Daily photo (21) centred coot

Daily photo (21) centred coot, originally uploaded by rachelandjohn.

Confined to the mooring today- still feeling rather unwell.

Some people reckon that you should avoid centring the subject of a photo at all costs- they say a centred composition can be unbearably dull. I’ve broken that rule here, but I think the photo still works well. It’s tricky to make a coot the subject of a photo with a wideangle lens- I had to use the railings and hose in the water to frame it. Just as I made this exposure it splashed into the water. (Not surprising, really- it’s very hot today!)

[Have just realised that a lot of my pics are ending up square format- perhaps I’m a closet 6×6 photographer!]

Peeling window film reminded me of cartoon flames. A quick edit today; illness meant I had only two to choose from!

daily photo (19) net curtain shed

In Uncategorized on September 6, 2009 at 7:32 pm

How many sheds have a net curtain? Not many, I suspect. This is at my in-laws in Norfolk. Apparently the net curtain went up on our wedding day, to screen the messy shed contents from the prying eyes of wedding guests!

Experimented with desaturating and high contrast processing, after a strong burst of fill when shooting. I think the effect accentuates the bright and breezy light out on the beach.
